Our History

In March 2022, Historic Music of Newport became a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, dedicated to preserving Newport’s rich musical heritage, but the story begins much earlier!

In the early 2000s, while working part time for the Preservation Society of Newport County and the Newport Music Festival, I began to wonder about the musical life in the mansions. There was very little to go on, until I found a mention of a party at Chateau-sur-Mer in 1857. The Fête Champtêre included a march of the same name, composed by William Schultze, and performed by the Germania Musical Society. The hunt was on to find this march!

In the 20 years since then, I have found over 800 pieces of music (and counting!) with Newport roots. These are works composed in Newport, composed by Newporters, or based on Newport. I have found biographical information on over 600 musicians (and counting!) who have lived in Newport from the earliest days of the city to the early 20th century.

I have not been able to find William Schultze’s march for the party at Chateau-sur-Mer, but I have found other works performed at that party and dozens of works composed by the Germanians about Newport or dedicated to Newport’s residents in the 1850s.

The list of works spans over 120 years of Newport’s history and includes music composed for Fort Adams, residents of Newport, and much more.

The musicians are members of the United States Artillery Bands at Fort Adams, members of the various bands stationed at the Naval Training Station, and professional and amateur soloist and ensemble members who performed throughout the city of Newport.

Looking forward, the goal of Historic Music of Newport is to give this music to the public and to tell the stories of the musicians who created music in Newport from its earliest days. This music belongs to all of us! This history is ours!
